A former Margate employee was arrested Wednesday on charges that include organized scheme to defraud, bribery and bid tampering, police said.
Kim Liakos worked as a grants program manager for the city from May of 2011 until September of 2015.
In August 2015, the Margate police and the Broward State Attorney’s started a 22-month investigation into the misappropriation of funds within the city’s block grant housing rehabilitation program, police said.
The investigation revealed Liakos received kickbacks of grant funds that are both federally and state funded, police said. The project overages in excess of $900,000 by way of overpayments and misallocation of grant funds were discovered during the course of the investigation.
An arrest warrant for Liakos was secured June 28, and police in Fort Lauderdale were able to take her into custody Wednesday without incident.
