Authorities are searching for five young men who robbed and shot a woman earlier this month in Oakland Park.
Broward sheriff's deputies said the victim, who was visiting from out of town, was sleeping in the passenger seat of her car about 4:15 a.m. on May 5, while her boyfriend went inside a Waffle House at 4840 NW Ninth Ave.
Deputies said a man jumped in the car and grabbed the woman's purse.
The woman struggled with the thief, but he was able to get away with her bag, deputies said.
Authorities said the victim didn't realize that the group drove away in two vehicles, and she jumped in the driver’s seat and followed a black Ford Fusion, even though the man who robbed her was in a silver four-door car.
Deputies said the men in the Fusion realized they were being followed on Interstate 95 and pulled over after exiting onto Sunrise Boulevard.
Deputies said one of the men got out of the car and began firing at the victim's vehicle.
The woman, who was injured, put her car into reverse and then sped forward past the shooter.
Authorities said the victim tried to flag down a passerby, but the driver wouldn't stop.
She eventually made her way back to Sunrise Boulevard, where she remembered seeing a BSO deputy minutes earlier.
The woman was taken to Broward Health Medical Center to be treated for her injuries.
Anyone with information about the robbery and shooting is asked to call Detective Trevor Goodwin at 954-321-4275. Anonymous tips can be made by calling Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS. A reward of up to $3,000 if offered for information that leads to an arrest.
