One person is dead after a car traveling through Times Square drove into a crowd of pedestrians, injuring several people.
New York City police say 22 other people have been injured. Early indications do not show signs of the crash being terrorist-related.
The driver of the car is a 26-year-old man who attempted to flee the scene. Police say the man has two previous drunken-driving arrests.
The car reportedly caught fire after the crash.
Television images taken at the scene midday Thursday showed people being taken away on stretchers.
The car came to rest with two of its wheels in the air, leaning on a lamppost and steel barriers intended to block vehicles from getting onto the sidewalk.
