Marathoners run extra half mile after course error

Runners of the Maine Marathon are getting apologies and refunds after a costly course error caused them to run an extra half mile, and end some runners' bids for next year's Boston Marathon, The Associated Press reports.

Officials say some runners were accidentally directed off course and down a dead end road, making them loop back and add the extra mileage. Because of the error, those who were hoping to qualify for the Boston Marathon may not have had qualifying times.

Charles Melton, the race director, said refunds will be distributed to those who missed out on the Boston Marathon because of the organizers' mistake.
