Senator Orin Hatch to Indians: “Just Take My Word for It”

Sen. Orrin Hatch, (R-Utah)

Published May 8, 2017

SALT LAKE CITY – Senator Orin Hatch must think American Indians are stupid.

Here are his comments regarding the naming of the Bears Ear National Mouument:

“The Indians, they don’t fully understand that a lot of the things that they currently take for granted on those lands, they won’t be able to do if it’s made clearly into a monument or a wilderness,” Hatch said on Sunday. “Once you put a monument there, you do restrict a lot of things that could be done, and that includes use of the land… Just take my word for it.”

American history is clear: American Indians should never simply take anyone’s “word for it.”

In reality, he wants the national monument distinction made by the Obama administration in December 2016 so that regulations are taken away from corporations to do what they want to the land surrounding Bears Ears.
