Theft charge dropped against Pembroke Pines cop accused of stealing watch

A grand theft charge has been dropped against a Pembroke Pines police officer who was arrested in February 2014 for stealing a watch from a Jared The Galleria of Jewelry, Broward prosecutors announced Friday.

Kevin Burgs, 40, was arrested Feb. 6, 2014, after police said he stole the watch the previous day while investigating  a burglary at the jewelry store at 11077 Pines Blvd.

Police said thieves broke in through the roof and stole about $75,000 of merchandise.

Surveillance video also caught Burgs as he took a watch valued at nearly $800, police said.

According to court records, prosecutors determined that Burgs was under the influence of painkillers when he took the watch because of dental surgery, causing him to "not fully comprehend his actions."

Burgs was suspended after his arrest, first with pay and then without pay, police said.

His current status with the Police Department was not immediately known.
