Emergency landing leaves plane propped vertically

A pilot and his passenger survived crashing right onto a Maine highway with his plane landing vertically.

It happened Tuesday morning near the town of Bowdoinham. The plane nose-dived onto the shoulder of I-295 and hit a guardrail just after 10 a.m.

The pilot and passenger walked away from the wreck virtually unscathed, police said.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, an engine-related problem forced the pilot to make the emergency landing.

The pilot told police he and his brother-in-law had just left the airport to go on a “joyride.”
