Family of 4 found sleeping at campsite near Elliott Key after they were reported missing

A family reported missing Sunday during a camping trip was found safe Sunday.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said the family was reported missing by a relative.

The two adults and children were found by the U.S. Coast Guard sleeping at a camping site near Elliott Key.

Crews began searching for the family and their 21-foot boat after a relative called 911 at about 9:30 p.m. Saturday when she realized her family hadn't returned from a camping trip.

By 5 a.m. Sunday, the family was located.

Everyone in the family was safe and they told rescue crews that they were planning to head back home at 7 a.m.
