Dog dies, man hurt in northeast Miami-Dade shooting

A dog was killed and a 26-year-old man was wounded by gunfire Sunday morning in northeast Miami-Dade County, police said.

Just before noon, Darren Smith and a pit bull-mix dog were discovered with gunshot wounds in the 18000 block of Northeast First Place, Miami-Dade police said.

Smith was shot in the leg and taken to Aventura Hospital for treatment, police said.

The dog was taken to a nearby animal hospital, where the dog was later pronounced dead.

Police believe Smith and the dog's owner were talking when an unknown man began shooting.

The shooter fled on foot in an unknown direction.
