Loved ones mourn family of 5 killed in Alachua County crash

A family of five were killed after a collision along Interstate 75 in Alachua County on Sunday.

Nathan Russell, his wife, Lynda, and their three children were killed when they were returning to Broward County after visiting Georgia to see relatives. On Sunday morning as the Russell family made their way back to Broward County, tragedy struck on I-75 in Alachua County.

A police report said their rental car veered across traffic and slammed into a tractor trailer that was broken down on the side of the highway.

La'nayah, 15, and her sister Natayah, 10, were killed, along with both of their parents.

Nathan Russell Jr, 10, initially survived the crash but died a day later at a hospital.

"I'm just in shock because just a few days ago, I said hi to the father and said hi to the mother," Diana Ordonez, a neighbor, said.

At the family's Coral Springs apartment building, neighbors were just learning of the tragedy that wiped out the entire family.

"It's very sad," Rodrigo Rodriguez said. "Nice neighbors, quiet neighbors."

Relatives and close friends are raising money for the five funerals, an enormous task being helped by a growing GoFundMe account that's already topped $38,000 in just three days.
