WASHINGTON — Democratic Vice Presidential Candidate Tim Kaine told Alicia Menendez during an interview over the weekend that finding an alternative for the Dakota Access pipeline is the “right thing to do.”

The construction of the Dakota Access pipeline though ancestral lands near the Standing Rock Indian Reservation has brought thousands of American Indians to encampments to oppose the pipeline.

“If it’s an important enough project, you ought to be able to find a route that works. What the Obama administration has done by saying, let’s look at route alternatives, I think is the right thing to do,” commented Senator Tim Kaine.

Kaine’s statement is the most significant advanced by any of the presidential or vice presidential candidates to date.

Energy Transfer Partners, the owner of the proposed pipeline, wants to complete work on the pipeline before the end of 2016.
