NIXON, NEVADA — The evacuation has been lifted for the Sutcliffe community on the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe’s reservation. A wildfire that began on Thursday night as the result of lightening forced the Tribe to evacuate the Sutcliffe community and part of the Pyramid Lake community on Saturday.

“The credit really goes out to our firefighters who did a great job of containing the fire. Even before the evacuation was called, our volunteer firefighters help to make sure the gymnasium in Nixon was ready,” said Scott Carey, tribal business officer for the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe on Sunday to Native News Online.

The gymnasium accommodated several families overnight. The gymnasium is still stocked with food, water and ice for those who are in need.

Even though the evacuation has been lifted, power has not been restored to the Sutcliffe community as of Sunday afternoon, which means there is water and sewer is not in operation for residents who live in the community.

The power is estimated to be out in Sutcliffe for possibly the next 3 days, the Tribe is working with NV Energy and local agencies to restore all services as soon as possible. The Tribal Council of the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe has made a declaration of a disaster for the reservation and is working with Federal & State agencies on the recovery efforts from the Tule wildfire.

At this time, the Tribe can confirm the following damage in the Sutcliffe area: one home,  three mobile homes, two vehicles, six structures at the unoccupied Hardscrabble Ranch and several outbuildings have all have been destroyed by this wildfire. An assessment is currently being performed to determine a more specific number of the outbuildings that have been destroyed.

The Tule wildlife has also burned large areas on the west side of Pyramid Lake. As a result of this damage, Pyramid Lake remains closed to recreation and all beaches are closed to the public. Tribal permits will not be issued until further notice; the public is advised to stay away the lake.

All State highways on the reservation have been reopened, and only local traffic is permitted in the Sutcliffe area.

All visitors to Pyramid Lake and anyone not involved with the recovery effort is advised to STAY AWAY from the area. The Tribe will provide additional updates and information as they become available.

Although the fire threat to Sutcliffe has ended, fire crews are still responding to active wildfire and recovery efforts.

The Tribe has closed Pyramid Lake to recreation until further notice.
