Tribal officials registering on Monday for the 2016 NCAI Mid Year Conference & Tradeshow in Spokane, Washington.

SPOKANE – Hundreds of tribal leaders are in Spokane, Washington, this week meeting for the 2016 Mid Year Conference & Tradeshow. Department of the Interior (DOI) Secretary Sally Jewell is confirmed to attend and deliver an address on Wednesday morning. DOI plays a significant role in managing 60 million acres of land on reservations across the country, and in fulfilling trust and treaty responsibilities to tribes.

NCAI LogoHeld at the Spokane Convention Center from Monday, June 27 – June 30, 2016, the theme of this year’s conference focuses – “Changing Climates, Inspiring Hope” – on holistic approaches to key issues facing Native communities.

Featured topics at Mid Year will include the new Trust Asset Management Reform Act, the Indian Child Welfare Act Regulations, education, law enforcement, sacred sites, emergency management, and much more.

On Monday morning, the U.S. Department of Education held a tribal consultation. Bill Mendoza, William Mendoza, executive director of the White House Initiative on American Indian and Alaska Native Education and Elizabeth Ross, Office of Elementary and Secondary Education, from the U.S. Department of Educaiton presided over the tribal consultation.

During the tribal consultation, tribal leaders and the public had the opportunity to offer comments on four areas of American Indian education that included: 1) Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA); 2) new grant program for Native language immersion schools and projects; 3) Report on Native American language medium education and 4) Report on responses to Indian student suicides.
