Tribal Police Officer is Stabbed, Then Shoots Inmate at IHS Tribal ER on Pine Ridge Indian Reservation

PINE RIDGE INDIAN RESERVATON – A Pine Ridge police officer was stabbed today at the Pine Ridge Indian Health Service Hospital’s emergency room in an altercation with an inmate.

Oglala Sioux Tribe Director of Public Relations Kevin Yellow Bird Steele confirmed on Friday afternoon. The officer then shot the inmate around 10:30 a.m. Friday morning.

Both the officer and inmate survived their injuries. The unidentified inmate was kept under arrest.

The FBI is assisting BIA tribal law enforcement in an investigation of the incident.

The Oglala Sioux Tribe Publice Department of Public posted the following statement on its Facebook page after the incident:

“THERE IS NO ACTIVE SHOOTER THREAT TO THE SAFETY OF THE PINE RIDGE VILLAGE, TRIBAL PROGRAMS, SCHOOLS, PUBLIC AND BUSINESSES AT THIS TIME.”
