CLEVELAND—The Cleveland Major League Baseball team has elected to keep its Chief Wahoo logo—a logo long viewed as offensive to American Indians and culture—as part of its uniform this coming baseball season.
Chief Wahoo, the silly-looking caricature will not be part of baseball caps and has been relegated to the sleeves of players’ jerseys. Chief Wahoo will be considered the team’s secondary logo.
The block “C” will become the team’s primary logo.
“Clearly, we are using it more heavily than we are the Chief Wahoo logo,” franchise owner Paul Dolan said (via Cleveland.com), and added the team has “no plans to get rid of Chief Wahoo, it is part of our history and legacy.”
The caps and batting helmets will have the block C beginning on opening day.
The Chief Wahoo logo was removed from the team’s road cap back in 2011 and players’ home battling helmet in 2013.
“We do have empathy for those who take issue with it,’ Dolan said in reference to those that find the Chief Wahoo character insensitive to Native Americans. “We have minimized the use of it and we’ll continue to do what we think is appropriate.”
