FORT DEFIANCE, ARIZONA – The sixth grade students at the Tsehootsooi Intermediate Learning Center on Tuesday were dealing with a serious issue – the Incredible Hulk or Iron Man?
At stake was the question of whether the story that would be told to them during the next half hour would center around the giant green superhero or the man in the brightly colored metal suit.
This was all part of a day-long program provided to students in the district’s schools by the Family for Literacy Program sponsored by KPMG, an Albuquerque firm that is known more for its work on the Navajo Nation’s annual audit than it is in promoting reading for children.
But yet that’s why a dozen or more members of the firm, including their spouses, were on hand Tuesday in the Window Rock District’s schools spending time in the classrooms reading to the students and passing out free books to the students.
John T. Kennedy, a partner in the company, said that the firm planned to distribute 7,600 books to the students on Tuesday and Wednesday with each student getting a book to take home and treasure.
