These are the two incidents inquired about last night. Both cases are still being actively investigated at this time. Any further information other than what has been provided will be provided at a later time when the information has been confirmed. I thank you for your patience as officers and detectives have been working very hard throughout the night working on these and many other cases.
At approximately 0135 hours, Southeast Area Command Officers were notified of a gun shot wound victim at UNMH hospital. The victim was able to provide information to officers that they were driving southbound on Girard Blvd approaching Gibson Blvd when another vehicle going northbound Girard Blvd from Gibson Blvd began shooting at their vehicle. The victims vehicle was hit twice with one round hitting the victim inside. Officers arrived on scene and located evidence in the area of the shooting. The victim is expected to survive the injury and will not be identified for their safety for fear of retaliation. A local business in the area did sustain damage from the shots fired and that business owner has been contacted. SE Detectives are currently working on the investigation. At this time it is unknown if the two parties knew each other.
At approximately 0236 hours, a DWI Enforcement Officer was conducting routine patrols in the area of San Mateo and Pan American Freeway when he observed a vehicle with a California license plate swerving in its lane. The officer conducted a traffic stop where the vehicle did pull over. The officer determined he was going to arrest the driver for his observations during his contact with the driver. In an attempt to avoid getting arrested the driver fled on foot in the area. Northeast Area Command officers quickly responded to assist in locating the driver.
The vehicle was occupied with a male passenger also seated in the vehicle. Officers took the male passenger into custody and quickly setup a perimeter in the area to locate the driver. The driver was located in a local trucking yard hiding under a tractor trailer and was taken into custody. During the investigation it was discovered the male passenger was under the influence of alcohol and was armed with a firearm. The male driver was found to be in possession of a large amount of cocaine and armed with a firearm.
Charges for both the occupants are still being determined by the detectives working the case. The driver was identified as Marcus Dotey (22) and the passenger identified as Rashad Ortiz (20) and both will be booked into MDC. Dotey does have a prior arrest from earlier this month.
Due to the excellent teamwork and quick response of the Officers, Detectives, Air Unit and K9 both subjects were taken into custody without incident.
