Albuquerque — Help Name our New Horses The Albuquerque Police Department has two new members, but they don’t have names. We need the community’s help! At the beginning of September, we asked the community to suggest names for the two new members of our Horse Mounted Unit.
Here are the top 6 (there was a tie for 5th place): Duke Nigel (In honor of fallen Rio Rancho Police Officer Nigel Benner) Justice Star Buckeye Blue or Azul The City has launched an online poll, so residents can weigh in on their favorite names.
The poll closes, a week from today, on Friday, October 2nd. Anyone can place their vote by following this link: http://www.cabq.gov/police/name-abqs-two-newest-police-horses/
BACKGROUND: The Department recently purchased two new Percheron Draft Horses which will be trained to become the newest members of the Department’s Horse Mounted Unit. The solid brown horse is two years old. He is expected to be very tall (19-hands) and needs a bit of training before he’ll be ready to patrol the streets. He is very calm, but doesn’t quite have the dinner table etiquette down just yet.
We will not be able to fully train him until he’s about three years old. The horse with a white star on his forehead is four years old. He is very mild-mannered and should be wonderful around children! He also seems to love the New Mexico heat!
Both horses came from Ohio and arrived last month. They will have to undergo extensive training before they are ready for active service. The horses cost about $3,500 each and were paid for through the existing Horse Mounted Unit’s budget. APD currently has seven horses, not including the two new ones, in our Mounted Unit. One of the horses is reaching retirement age. There are two full-time Officers assigned to the unit and 10 part-time members.
