It’s getting scary out there. And not just from gun violence. Sure everyday Americans are treated to the morning news of more and more deaths attributable to the US insatiable need to make up for penis size by owning ever more powerful guns.

But there’s no hot button issue in America that brings out more insanity and scary behavior than the issue of 2nd Amendment Rights and the endless confusion surrounding this most deabted and argued portion of the US Constitution.

Every American traditional news organization can attest to this fact – their Web servers are crammed with commenters making the most insane comments everytime a story is published about the need for sensible firearm legislation in the United States.

The Washington Post has a hot story running headlined “Newtown Shooter Had Thousands of Rounds of Ammunition In His House” and this story must be literally heating up the the D. C. area with the firestorm of Web commenting that has ensued.

Here are a few choice bits:

“All the people who don’t like guns or the 2nd amendment there are good countries like china and North Korea to live in. You’ll feel safe there the government has all the guns.” Writes MOG till I Die.

“Lock and load, let’s have this out right now! Civil War 2.0 ….let’s go!” Quips Founders..1791

“There is no conceivable utility for feeble minded people, yet we allow them to breed with impunity. There is not one word in the Constitution against banning them….

My Constitutional rights are worth more than the lives of your children. Get used to it.” Opines ipa24(2.0).

“RACISTS anti-gun Democrats want to bring back “Their Jim Crow Laws” to suppress minority gun ownership and their right to self protection from crime & oppression.

Liberal Democrats are the enemy of minorities that Republicans fought and freed from their slavery. Democrats spent 100 years denying Blacks 2nd Amendment Rights and are “still doing it”.

Mess with the teeth of the Constitution and you just might get bit!” And another pearl of wisdom from Founders..1791.

The comments were coming in by the second, so many that the WAPO comment system stopped reporting the total at 5000+.

A story at Reuters entitled “Obama makes impassioned plea for gun control legislation” is drawing out the crazies as well. This one sounds dangerously close to threatening the President of the United States:

“Barack Obama is the very reason we need lots & lots of guns.

If somebody reasonable were in the White House, it wouldn’t be so important.” Writes someone calling himself retired_sandman.

Over at NBC where they are running a story entitled “Invoking Newtown Obama Presses Congress on Guns” a person calling himself chief1055 writes:

“Hey Obama, why don’t you make all the liberals happy and burn the Constitution and declare yourself dictator. Isn’t that what you really want?”

There is a lot of sentiment against President Obama as if he personally and all by himself came up with the idea to propose some sort of sensible gun violence legislation but it is the majority of the people in the United States, spurred on in part by the Newtown massacre of children and adults that rallied the country together to try and make a dent in these senseless tragedies, like at least trying to pass legislation that closes gun show loop holes and expands background checks.

A recent Quinnipiac University poll shows 88% of Americans support expanded background checks and an earlier poll by ABC and the Washington Post showed 91% in favor. A recent CBS poll also found about 90% of Americans in favor of expanded background checks.

Polling for an assault weapons ban shows less support for such a measure. With about six in ten Americans in favor of such a ban. However such a measure is unlikely to go anywhere. Such a measure is arbitrary at best – banning a firearm just because it looks somewhat military or menacing did little to reduce violent crime the last time such a ban was enacted.

One thing is certain though, out of every controversial issue from gay rights to abortion, gun control sure brings out the nuts…
